Architect's Newspaper

On October 12,  released its annual assessment of 鈥渢hreatened and at-risk landscapes鈥 in the United States. This year鈥檚 thirteen sites were organized based on five themes: 鈥渕onetization of open space,鈥 in which parks come under pressure to generate profit; 鈥渞esource extraction,鈥 which is under particular attack by Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke, who proposed relaxing management rules for six monuments, exposing them to mining and logging; 鈥減ark equity,鈥 charging to use parks or converting them to sport and cultural venues; 鈥渄etrimental effects of shadow,鈥 where the surrounding development is built up to the point where the park no longer receives adequate light; and 鈥渢he devaluation of cultural lifeways,鈥 in which ancestral lands and other sites of cultural significance are threatened.
